Figure 1 is the February Payments Industry Stock Price Tracker. The chart measures current stock prices and market caps (as of February 27, 2012) and changes over the last 30 days as well as year-to-date movements. The stock market continues to perform well in 2012, with a 4% gain for the S&P 500 over the last 30 days. Performance across the payments value chain outpaced the market both in the last 30 days as well as through the first two months of 2012.

In summary:

  • The issuer sector outpaced market growth this month by a factor of 2x with an 8% gain. Bank of America is up 36% through the first two months of the year.
  • The processor / acquirer sector performed slightly better than the issuers with a 9% gain. Heartland Payment Systems led this group with an 18% increase this month.
  • The networks reflected a 19% gain this month, rebounding strongly from the 7% loss in January.
